More and more home automation companies/products are quickly jumping from the shadows, grabbing attention and providing options. Smart thermostats are one of the leading debates in the home automation world. As a home automation company, we still get questions about these smart thermostats all the time. Hopefully we’ll be able to answer some of those questions.
What is a smart thermostat?
It’s actually quite simple. They allow the user to have complete control over the temperature of their home, both heating and cooling.
Even better, the user can control their thermostat from any wifi connected device, weather you’re across the room, or halfway around the world.
What do you think you spent this winter on your heating bill? A good guess is somewhere on the upward of $600, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. We’re willing to bet those who live in the coldest part of the country probably spent a bit more. What you may, or may not have known is that a smart thermostat can save you 6%-10% more on your heating and cooling bills.
We’re big believers in smart thermostats such as Nest Thermostat, Lutron TouchPro Honeywell Thermostat and the new Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control.
They are easily programmable!
Set it and forget it! (We’re not afraid to use the Ronco Rotisseries slogan for your smart home thermostats).
Program your work schedule into the device to recognize when you leave for work and when you return. Not only will you save on energy, but you’ll ensure complete comfort. Going on vacation? Program it into the thermostat, or your smart device; iPhone, Android, tablet, iPad, etc. Again, you’ll save energy while your away. No need to waste a ton on heating and air if you’re not even home.
Will a smart thermostat recognize any major heating/cooling changes?
The answer is yes!
A neat feature smart thermostats have is that they have something called “Auto Alerts”. Extreme temperature change alerts and filter change reminders are sent to your smart phone. If your kid ran out the back door and forgot to close the door behind him, you’ll get a text/email stating a drastic change in temperature.

Smart thermostats have a “Zoned System” feature.
If you want to be able to control the temperature of each individual room within the home, you have that option. If you have one of those homes where the temperature down stairs is always cooler that the temperature upstairs, you can control that. This can increase energy savings and comfort! You can even program most smart thermostats to work alongside your humidifier, dehumidifier and ventilator.
