Lowcountry Lighting Project

Project Summary

Full-Scale Lutron Lighting Control System Overhaul for a Memorable Family Event

Lighting Project

This lighting project began with a call from homeowners facing a significant challenge: they needed their entire home’s Lutron Lighting Control system overhauled and fully operational in time for their daughter’s upcoming wedding. The original lighting infrastructure was not only outdated, but also frustrating to operate. Installed years ago by another integrator, the existing Crestron-based system was poorly programmed and lacked any form of user-friendliness. As a result, the homeowners struggled to control even the simplest lighting functions throughout the house—a major issue, especially when preparing to host friends and family for such an important occasion.

To complicate matters further, the previous installer had not provided any documentation from the previous lighting project.  There were no panel schedules, no wiring blueprints, and no programming files to reference. Our team had to work from the ground up, manually identifying and tracing all lighting loads and determining their positions within each module. This level of troubleshooting demanded an extraordinary attention to detail and a deep understanding of whole-home automation systems.

Once the groundwork was complete, our focus shifted to redesigning the Lutron Lighting project control system from scratch. We replaced outdated equipment, cleaned up disorganized wiring, and upgraded every element of the system to meet current standards. In one particular instance, we reused an existing enclosure rather than installing a new Lutron cabinet. By consulting the official Lutron layout guidelines for legacy enclosures, we ensured that all module spacing and ventilation requirements were met without compromising safety or reliability.

The existing system had a total of 47 wall-mounted keypads, all of which were outdated, unengraved, or non-functional. These were replaced with Lutron HomeWorks QS SeeTouch keypads. Each new keypad was clearly engraved and properly programmed for easy scene control, eliminating the guesswork that had plagued the homeowners previously. This marked a significant improvement in the way they interacted with their home’s Lutron lighting system.

Additionally, we installed new touchscreen interfaces and introduced the homeowners to the Lutron mobile app. This gave them full control of their home’s Lutron lighting via their smartphones or tablets—an invaluable convenience for managing ambiance, energy efficiency, and functionality throughout their living space.

The final Lutron Lighting project system featured 100 zones of centralized Lutron lighting and ten integrated fan speed controllers. Everything was routed through a HomeWorks QSX Processor, ensuring seamless communication between components and rock-solid system performance. Our team meticulously configured the system to provide optimal lighting scenes for every area of the home, from the main living spaces to private bedrooms and outdoor zones.

This wasn’t just a technical upgrade—it was a complete transformation of the homeowners’ experience. What was once a source of daily frustration became a reliable, elegant, and intuitive Lutron lighting system that elevated the entire feel of their home.
