The HDMI Forum Inc has announced a new certification program for Ultra High Speed HDMI cables. The push for the certification program is to ensure that 4K and 8K HDMI cables accommodate the features and capabilities of the HDMI 2.1 specifications.
What is the HDMI Forum, Inc.?
The HDMI Forum, Inc., is a mutual benefit, non profit organization that is composed of leading manufacturers of consumer electronics. Their responsibilities include developing new HDMI specifications, guiding the further direction of HDMI technologies and foster the global adaptation and interoperability.
What Are the New Specifications for HDMI 2.1?
- Higher Video Resolution – HDMI 2.1 must support high resolution and refresh rates for 8K60Hz and 4K120Hz.
- Dynamic HDR – The cable must provide video display that is ideal for depth, detail, brightness and contrast.
- Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable – Must support 48G bandwidth and feature very low EMI emission. It is also important that the cable is backwards compatible and will work with existing HDMI technology.
- eARC – HDMI 2.1 features eARC for full compatibility between audio devices and upcoming 2.1 devices.
- Enhanced Refresh Rate – Establishes an added level of seamless and smooth transitions for video and audio. Must include variable refresh rate, quick media switching, and quick frame transport to eliminate lag and to enhance a fluid and detailed image.
- Auto Low Latency Mode – Ideal latency settings are automatically set for uninterrupted viewing and interactivity.
Why are Certified Cables Important?
To put it simply, when your HDMI cable is certified you know you are purchasing the best product. If you have an 8K TV it wouldn’t be wise to use a cheap non-certified $5 cable. You would not know if your television is receiving the best input possible; whereas, a certified HDMI would give you the best quality viewing that your TV is capable of. Most lengthy HDMI cables fail to deliver quality content, so make sure you purchase a certified HDMI cable especially for longer cords.
